Build your own imperium
Drop Command is a really nice take on the strategy genre and combines it with an action shooter. You can control many different mechs and build up an army to defend your moons and planets.
Gameplay
The gameplay is really simple. Select your next mission location and type based on the state of that world. Complete the mission objectives to gain more control or defend a key point on a moon. By completing missions you obtain resources like power, money or production lines.
You can upgrade or build on moons and planets to build up your empire. Recruit soldiers to help defend your stations. Build new mechs for yourself or your soldiers.
The demo content is quite short, at least for the version on Itch.io. The developer just released a post that he got his game on Steam and will release the demo there as well. on the 20 march 2026. I will write an updated post if there is new content available. Check the comments to see if there is another post. Another really interesting feature to make the missions not boring is the map generation. You will never have the same map in a mission. The game generates a completely new one for every mission.
Art
While the loading screens and game artwork looks really good. The mechs and map assets are really low poly. It doesn’t change anything for fun, but it is still a little annoying to constantly switch between the high detail loading screens and the low poly mechs. But that is the only criticism I can give on the art. The music is a good fit to the game and the sound effects fit the low poly style. It’s understandable that the developer is using a low poly artstyle to keep the production smaller and game lighter on the computers.
Developer
Drop Command is being developed and published by PillBugGames. PillBugGames core consists of three brothers that have been playing and making games together for decades. Matthew is the lead programmer, Ben is the artist of the group and David is the narrative builder and game designer.
They are based in Vancouver, Canada and are working on Drop Command on the side. This is not their first game though they already published another game with the name Mech Shuffle on Steam. While only having 16 reviews at the time of writing this post they are very positive.
Summary
I can really recommend Drop Command. Its main game loop is really fun and the fighting and movement of the mechs are really well implemented. I have really high hopes for the full release that may be coming in Q3 of 2026. While you need a little to get used to the graphics they are not really bad. I’m going to keep an eye on Drop Command and hope that they take a little more time to polish it before releasing the 1.0. I wish the three brothers all the success they need to keep working on those games and hope they continue to have fun while doing so.
